In India,
the word for dust is 'khaki'. In India, there is a lot of dust.
In fact, there is so much dust that when the British Army was headquartered
there, their dress white uniforms became coated with dust every time they
set foot outside their tents. Now, this was the nineteenth century
and the British were a little 'fussy' to begin with. (They owned
most of the world at the time). One particular priggish officer
didn't like his boys parading around looking dirty. So he took a
piece of the dust encrusted white drill twill cotton cloth and sent it
by post to the home office in London:
"I must have a fabric that is
the same color as the dust here in this God Forsaken place." He
wrote.
In typical British fashion, they
took his request quite seriously and set about weaving a fabric that would
finish the color of Indian dust. When they mailed it back to him
for approval, he called it-------"Khaki" and ordered all his company's
uniforms in the new fabric.
Khaki evolved from there to the
casual cotton fabric it became in the twentieth century. Later,
when the British Empire exploited the resources of Asia, they had khaki
produced in British protectorates and crown colonies of Hong Kong, Taiwan
and various islands. As the khaki was imported from that part of
the world, it came with the odd slang name of "Chino".
But in every country, with every
name, the natural fiber that is the most wearable type of fabric to this
day, is the color of dust.
"Dust" is not only a new
label and a new brand, but a new approach to fabric. Just as "khaki"
evolved as a solution to a new, foreign world, Dust is a
collection of fabrications that are solutions to the challenges of our
new century. All products in our Dust line are "easy care"
weaves and blends. As the microchip has revolutionized personal
electronics, it also has powered looms and washing processes to achieve
the softest and must durable fabrics yet known to man.
Let Dust take you in the
future while it reminds you of the past. It's the best of the new
high technology world that builds on the tradition and quality of
our ancestors.
Dust...it's a good story
and a great new brand...Dust
